Timbers open their 2010 season with 1-0 win at home against the Rochester Rhino’s as Ryan Pore scores on a penalty kick in the 85 minute of play. The 15,418 sellout crowd went nuts.
The starting line up had 5 new players. Doug DeMartin made his professional debut at forward. Joining him on the front line was fellow newcomer O.J. Obatalo. At midfield James Marcelin made his debut as a Timber and Rodtigo Lopez got his first start On the back line Ian Joy and Quavas Kirk made their debut as a Timbers. With that many new starters the Timbers were out of sync most of the first half . It could have been due to nerves of being the first match of the season in front of the big crowd. The Timbers did have some chances but did not find the net. The second half the Timbers seem to be more in control with Ryan Pore sending in a blast off the post in the 69 minute. Sub Alex Nimo had the best chance of the night as Ryan Pore found him alone on a cross to the far post which Alex put over the bar from 3 yards out in the 83 minute. Brain Faber took a corner kick in the 84th minute that was hand balled by Rochester defender Roberts which set up Ryam Pore’s PK. Over all it was a good showing by the Timbers in their first match of the season but Rochester put up a good fight as well. The fans expect the Timbers to win it all before the Timbers make the move to the big time MLS. The Timbers have yet to make it to the finals other then so many years ago back in 1975. I do hope that magic from back then comes to this years team where we can finally raise the Cup for the first time going out on top. It is time to get some silverware for the best fans of soccer in the United States. The MLS will welcome Portland with open arms as we had bigger crowds on this Saturday then 3 of their MLS teams.
Go Timbers!
