I started going to Timber's games just last year. I am an avid fan and player of this sport. I guess what I don't get is why the T/A feels the need to chant "You suck, not a very nice person" after the opposing team kicks, etc? Especially, recently during family night? Can someone explain why its necessary?

First off you made a post on a board where most of those who chant this do not visit. You need to post on www.soccercityusa.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.plIt is a chant that I for one think is old and has out lived its purpose. You have to Understand that most in the Timbers Army feel they are edgy and can do what they want. Will it ever go away. I doubt it.

Indeed, I suggest you post the same question on the other board...you will get the full range of responses; some may be more illuminating than others. Do be prepared for both genuine responses and stinging remarks...like most message boards, it's a diverse group who's common interest is soccer.
I think the chant got started a couple of years ago and was taken from another team (Chicago, MLS?). I've heard it elsewhere when watching MLS games on TV. It did get tiring after the first year and some attempts have been made and continue to be made to change the last word to fit the situation (goal keeper's last name, reference to Canada, etc.). Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. (Which is why you will see a white dry erase board raised at times.)
Nothing special was done just for family night nor just because of it. If that was the Vancouver match, there was less unison in the North end than normal. Keep in mind also, that if someone is trying to use the white board, they have to remember to do it every time...and that person is usually trying to watch the match as well. Then it seems to default into the old original version. We've never been able to figure it out, but I'll toss a guess at it, that maybe only 1/3 of the folks that are in the North end pay attention to either this or the other board. So trying to get somesort of message out is not as easy as it might sound.
...don't know if that helps answer your question or not.
