On this day April 19th 1980 the Timbers lost in California 5-1 with Clyde Best scoring the Timbers 1 goal.
So looking back from 2001 who was is the best player to ware a Timbers uniform? .
Our forwards you have Byron Alvarez 93 total points with 42 goals scored McKinley Tennyson has the most points in a single season at 42 and 18 goals. Alan Gordon played one season for the Timbers and had 35 points and 17 goals. Fadi Afash had 36 points and 18 goals in one season. Other forwards to note are Mandjou Keita and Takayuki Suzuki
At mid we have Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar 12 assist in one season and 64 points 44 assist and 10 goals as a Timber. Other mids to note include Andrew Gregor, Brian Winters, Scott Benedetti, Alex Bengard, Ryan Pore , Greg Howes Michael O’Neil Tommy Poltl Tony McManus and Jake Sagare.
Defenders we have Gavin Wilkerson, Scot Thompson, david Hayes, Stephan Keel, Cameron Knowels, Leonard Griffin Justin Thompson, Brent Sancho and Lee Morrison.
Goal Keepers we have Josh Saunders with 334 saves, 22 shutouts and 41 wins. Matt Napoleon with 26 wins, 249 saves and 12 shut outs, Josh Wicks had 0.60 goal against average best for one season, Steve Cronin had 15 wins for one season and a 0.68 goals against average.
My picks are best forward Alan Gordon. Alan only played one season for the Timbers but what a season he had. It all started when he scored 26 seconds into the first match of the season against Seattle in 2004.. Alan was picked up by the LA Galaxy in 2005 and is currently still playing for them.
In midfield i picked Hugo Alcarez-Cuellar, This was a easy pick as the records he holds in assist at 44 is amazing.
Scot with one T Thompson was an easy pick as best defender as well. He made an impact from the start once he joined the Timbers.
At keeper I would have to pick Steve Cronin.
My all time lineup would be Alan Gordon and Byron Alvarez at forwards. Hugo Alcarez-Cuellar right side mid. Andrew Gregor in the center with Tony McManus. On the left side Ryan Pore.
Center Defense would be Stephen Keel with Gavin Wilkinson. On the left back David Hayes and on the right Scot Thompson.
My pick for best player of the Portland Timbers from 2001 to today is Alan Gordon. I have always liked players who score over defenders and keepers.
On Tuesday I will have my picks on the best players of the NASL years.
Then I will post the player I think was the best player ever to be a Timber.
